And the Client said, “My Daughter loves dragonflies.”

Dragonflies are a marvel and I had them on my “one day list” of things to be inspired by, so I was plenty excited when this birthday gift commission flowed into our lives. Back in the day (wow, I got my biology degree 30 some years ago), I took classes where dragonflies made themselves present. Three aquatic ecology classes had me finding their lesser known stage on field trips around the Pocono Mountains, well, Plateau.

So here are the stages in our creation, post approval of the design:

First came the head, thorax, and abdomen which got glued next to paper wings. Cutting up those wings came next.

I picked out several types of amber glass, then worked with one at a time. Wings came into being.

Margaret first imagined a vertically aligned background at the bottom, but stopped and then moved forward.

Over time the background surrounded the dragonfly, and it was clear Margaret was highlighting the dragonfly while creating a beautiful background.
